Glasgow considers parking permit charges based on car emissions as part of the new Transport Strategy

Glasgow is currently developing a new Glasgow Transport Strategy, and is considering various innovative measures already in places across the UK. These measures include calculating parking permits for residents based on how polluting their cars are (as introduced in Edinburgh), or a Workplace Parking Levy (as seen in Nottingham) where businesses pay a levy for providing parking spaces to employees that is then invested in sustainable mobility projects.

Other plans in Glasgow include a regional Glasgow metro scheme, improvements to bus services, longer opening hours of the subway at weekends, more bicycle parking, and facilitating more electric vehicles on the street alongside providing sufficient chargers.

Glasgow Council's Group Manager, Deborah Paton, stated: “We want to explore emissions based resident parking charges such as Edinburgh has. That is a key tool we have at our disposal as a local authority to try and intervene and manage the emissions type of vehicles we have in the city.”

Glasgow’s Transport Strategy timeline is 2030, the same year the city wants to achieve carbon neutrality.
