Florence expands sustainable transport network with tram extension

Florence has taken another step towards improving its sustainable public transport network with the inauguration of an extended section of the T2 tramway line. Operated by Gest, a subsidiary of RATP Dev, the line now connects Peretola Airport to San Marco Square, enhancing mobility across the city.

The extension adds six additional stops, strengthening connections between key locations. In 2024, the T2 line carried 11.5 million passengers, and the expansion is projected to increase annual ridership by more than 3.4 million.

Advancing eco-friendly transport

Gest plays a central role in Florence’s efforts to reduce congestion and pollution through its electric tram system. The tramway network complements the city’s bus services, managed by Autolinee Toscane—another RATP Dev subsidiary—which recently introduced electric buses to further enhance environmental sustainability.

“This is yet another step in the development of mobility in Florence,” said Gest CEO Denis Ratto. “With the opening of this extension, the tram service will link the airport to the historic city centre in just 35 minutes.”

To support this expansion, Gest has launched the fourth edition of its Accademia training programme, hiring 14 new drivers, three maintenance workers, and two controllers.

Future network expansion

Gest currently operates both the T1 and T2 tramway lines, which connect key areas of Florence, including the airport. It will also manage the forthcoming T3 tramway line, linking Libertà to Bagno a Ripoli, with construction started on 25 January.
