Finalists announced for EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK Awards 2024

Under the 2024 annual theme ‘shared public space´, six finalists for the renowned European urban mobility awards have been selected by an independent panel of mobility and transport experts for their outstanding activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, which took place from 16-22 September 2024.

The two awards being presented are:

  • The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award, recognising excellence by municipalities in advancing sustainable urban mobility.
  • The MOBILITYACTION Award, recognising excellence in mobility management planning solutions led by businesses, citizen initiatives, civil society organisations, institutions, or municipalities.

Nominees for the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award

  • Bologna (Italy) has been nominated for its commitment to making sustainable mobility more accessible, hosting educational activities and information stands on urban mobility plans and public space transformation during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK. Key initiatives include Bologna 30, which reduced speed limits to 30 km/h on 70 % of municipal roads, and a car-free day in the city centre.
  • Braga (Portugal), a previous 2022 award winner, was selected for its focus on upskilling politicians and mobility experts to drive change, the expansion of cycling infrastructure, the implementation of school mobility projects, and the transformation of Dom Pedro V Street into a shared public space.
  • Leipzig (Germany) was recognised for its traffic-calming and pedestrianisation efforts, particularly a car-free day engaging 25 000 participants. During EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, Leipzig also hosted workshops, lectures, and discussions focused on sustainable mobility, alongside bicycle-related activities.

Nominees for the MOBILITYACTION Award

  • Associació Amics de Ca la Cileta del Palau d'Anglesola (El Palau d’Anglesola, Spain) was shortlisted for its inclusive approach to street space, fostering intergenerational connections between primary school students and the elderly, with a focus on sustainable and accessible mobility.
  • Bucharest-Ilfov Public Transport Intercommunity Development Association (Bucharest, Romania) was selected for transforming Gheorghe Duca Boulevard into a temporary exhibition space, showcaseing vintage vehicles to illustrate the city's transport evolution. New routes were also introduced, connecting key hubs to the exhibition.
  • Pěšky městem (Czech Republic) was nominated for promoting active mobility, encouraging children and parents to walk to school across 501 schools, thereby enhancing safety and inclusivity, while reducing traffic around schools.

The two final winners will be announced at the award ceremony on 27 March 2025.
