The European Commission has launched a call for the European Green Capital Award 2023. This annual award is presented to a European city with at least 100,000 inhabitants – for its commitment to economic, environmental and social sustainability.
The winning city receives a prize of €600,000 to further improve its environmental sustainability and help achieve its sustainability goals. Cities are evaluated on their previous actions and future plans across 12 areas, including sustainable urban mobility, air pollution, noise and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Cities with a population of 20,000-100,000 are eligible to enter the European Green Leaf Award 2022 award. In addition to the award, two cities receive a prize of €200,000 each to achieve their sustainability visions.
Being selected as a European Green Capital Award winner leads to a greater focus on environmental projects and a higher profile for the city, along with increased tourism and foreign investment. Winners and shortlisted cities also have access to the exclusive European Green Capital Network, a platform for sharing knowledge and best practice.
Past applicants affirm that the application process alone proved invaluable for assessing their progress and plans, and for making comparisons with peer cities.
Applications close on 28 October 2020. For further information and guidance visit the awards portal.
