EMT Madrid (ES) achieved a historic milestone in 2024, transporting nearly 476 million passengers across its 229 municipal bus lines—a 4.71 % increase from 2023. Daytime services carried 462 million passengers, while night services, known as ‘owls,’ transported 7.3 million passengers, the highest figure since 2007. October 2024 was the busiest month, with 45.8 million passengers, while May 14 set a new daily record of 1.8 million passengers. Free service periods activated by the Madrid City Council significantly boosted ridership, benefitting 14.6 million passengers.
The most popular bus lines included line 34 (Cibeles–Las Águilas), line 70 (Plaza de Castilla–Alsacia), and line 27 (Embajadores–Plaza de Castilla). EMT Madrid expanded its network with new lines in El Pardo and Los Cármenes and introduced an on-demand bus service for the Fuencarral-El Pardo district. Since 2019, EMT has added 18 new lines and continues its electrification efforts, currently operating 36 fully electric lines, with more planned for 2025.
The Bicimad electric bike network also experienced significant growth in 2024, recording over 9.94 million trips—a 30.6 % increase from 2023. The network expanded with 19 new stations and 248 additional bikes, reaching a total of 630 stations and 7 735 bikes. The user base grew to 572 015 registered users, including over 130 000 active users. EMT Madrid remains committed to enhancing sustainable and efficient mobility, with further electrification of the bus fleet and continued expansion of the Bicimad network planned for 2025.
