EIT Urban Mobility launches its first free online course

EIT Urban Mobility Academy has launched the first of its Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) called 'Designing the Cycling City'. The MOOC consists of a practical course for transportation, design, and planning professionals who aim to increase the uptake of transport via cycling.

The online course is supported by the EIT Urban Mobility’s Competence hub, which delivers training programmes and content for urban mobility professionals. Creative and innovative training programs have been developed drawing on the EIT Urban Mobility’s extensive network of 85+ European companies, universities, research institutions and cities. The courses highlight trends, key issues and controversies, as well as new technologies.

The MOOC will be delivered by Lior Steinberg, the Co-found of Humankind, and George Liu, a Micromobility Researcher. Together they bring diverse international experience and a depth of knowledge on the Netherlands, where 27% of all trips are taken by bicycle. While the course is designed to be completed over 5 weeks at one hour per day, participants may complete it at their own pace.

The course consists of 5 modules focused on different aspects of designing cycling infrastructure. The modules will provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge required to design physical infrastructure which best serves cyclists. The course culminates with a final project which gives participants an opportunity to creatively apply the tools and principles they have acquired. The course outline is as follows:

  • Module 1 – Designing for cycling: what do you need to know?
  • Module 2 – Linear infrastructure: lanes, paths, and streets
  • Module 3 – Points of interaction: intersections, bus stops, and parking
  • Module 4 – Visualizing your idea: sketchup, streetmix, google earth
  • Module 5 – Course project: Re-imagine your street
