EAFO 2023 Consumer Monitor - results reveal generally positive consumer attitudes toward electric cars in the EU

The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) has published the results of their latest pioneering survey on consumer attitudes toward electromobility. The EAFO survey, with over 19,000 respondents, from 12 different Member States, is among the most extensive consultations on consumer attitudes toward battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the world.

The results showed that consumers have a positive attitude towards switching to battery-electric cars. However, three main barriers continue to prevent widespread adoption:

  1. Purchase price
  2. Driving range
  3. Availability of recharging infrastructure

Despite these obstacles, 57% of the surveyed non-BEV European drivers would consider buying a BEV in the short, medium or long term. In addition 33% of this same group are considering buying a BEV within the next 5 years.

The survey results provide valuable insights into potential measures that could support consumers in the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles. Notably, respondents indicated that a subsidy to purchase a new BEV would be the most impactful incentive promoting BEV uptake. Additionally, respondents highlighted that access to relevant information would be useful in their decision-making process. Information on EV batteries, range, and cost comparisons with petrol or diesel vehicles, was noted to be potentially most useful.

The European Green Deal and the Sustainable Smart Mobility Strategy aim to reduce transport greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2050, with fleet electrification playing a crucial role in achieving this target. Therefore, understanding consumers’ views, attitudes and challenges regarding BEVs is essential. The insights revealed through the survey will aid in developing and implementing policies that align with these EU climate targets.
