In Malta's capital city of Valletta, an e-bike sharing service called 'Tallinja Bike' has been launched, which continues to improve mobility around the city and encourages multimodality.
Across five strategically located docking stations, 40 pedelecs will be available to hire at a rate of €3.00 for the first half hour and then €2.00 for every additional 30 minutes. Regular users can also benefit from cheaper rates by using their Tallinja card.
The popularity of e-bikes is growing around Europe, with 2017 data from the industry association ‘Zweirad-Industrie-Verband' showing that one in five bikes sold in Germany is an e-bike. Uber also plans to launch its 'Jump' electric bicycles across Europe in 2018 as it looks to expand operations beyond US markets.
Malta's General Manager of Public Transport, Konrad Pule said,
“After recent successful collaborations with the Valletta Ferry Service and IoScoot motorbike sharing, we are now collaborating again with a new mobility service -Tallinja Bike – where electric bicycles are available through a sharing platform in Valletta."
“Through this new collaboration with Tallinja Bike, we are offering a healthy, clean and fun way of moving around Valletta, effectively spreading the reach of the public transport network to the heart of our capital city,”
