Ireland's National Transport Authority (NTA) has announced a new smart demand-responsive transport (DRT) pilot for Killarney, which started on 11 August 2025.
This forms part of the NTA’s Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan and follows the recent launch of a similar service, TFI Anseo, in Achill, Co. Mayo. The aim is to make public transport more flexible and accessible through a modern, app-based system tailored to local needs.
The Killarney service will use the TFI Anseo app, allowing passengers to book journeys when needed, similar to ridesharing, but with the reliability and low cost of public transport. Instead of fixed routes, passengers can request pick-ups and drop-offs anywhere within the Killarney service zone. The smart DRT system includes passenger and driver apps, a contact centre, operator dashboards, smart routing and other technology to improve efficiency.
This new service is designed to complement existing public transport, making it easier for people to reach essential destinations such as medical appointments, workplaces, shops and social events. It also supports environmental goals by reducing private car use and improving connections to other transport networks. Most journeys will cost €3 or less.
Blathin McElligott, Head of Corporate Services at the NTA, said the Killarney launch is an important step in improving urban mobility. She noted that the service is flexible, inclusive and environmentally friendly, helping people connect to work, education, healthcare and social opportunities while supporting climate targets.
The pilot will run for 12 months, funded through the Government’s Climate Action Fund. More pilot areas are planned as part of the continued expansion of the smart DRT programme.
