Copenhagen expands sustainable tourism scheme for summer 2025

Copenhagen has relaunched its CopenPay programme for summer 2025, now featuring over 90 attractions and new rewards for environmentally conscious travellers. Running from 17 June to 17 August, the initiative encourages low-impact travel by offering free bike rentals, guided tours, yoga sessions and discounted entry to major sites.

A key focus this year is reducing the climate impact of transport. Visitors arriving by train or electric vehicle, or who purchase sustainable aviation fuel for their flight are rewarded - supporting slower, more sustainable travel.

The 2024 pilot saw a 29% rise in bike rentals and high participant satisfaction, showing strong potential for green tourism to influence visitor behaviour.

Top attractions like the National Museum, Kronborg Castle, and Copenhill are among the participants. The programme aligns with Copenhagen’s goal to be the world’s most sustainable urban destination, supported by its cycling infrastructure, eco-certified hotels and clean waterways.

CopenPay has also gained international recognition and is now featured in the EU’s Transition Pathway for Tourism, positioning Copenhagen as a leader in climate-conscious tourism.
