Commission holds five consultation workshops on the new Urban Mobility Initiative

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport held five consultation workshops to gather feedback on the new Urban Mobility Initiative, which will be presented by the end of 2021.

The European Commission’s new Urban Mobility Initiative, currently under preparation, will operationalise the goals of the European Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Transport Strategy.

The consultation workshop on the new EU Urban Mobility Initiative for local and regional authorities, civil society, and the general public, held on 14 June 2021, inaugurated the series of workshops. More than 170 people attended the event, which was organised in cooperation with the European Committee of the Regions and Eltis. Participants provided feedback on the political challenges of urban mobility, active and shared mobility, and public and collective transport.

On 15 June, the European Commission held a workshop on the new EU urban mobility initiative for the representatives of the Member States Expert Group on Urban Mobility (EGUM).

A consultation workshop on urban freight transport and logistics took place on 21 June 2021, organised in partnership with the European technology platform ALICE and the POLIS network. Approximately 120 people attended the event and provided feedback in the areas of integrated urban logistics planning, data collection and sharing, spatial planning and new sustainable transport solutions.

On 24 June, a workshop allowed urban mobility practitioners and stakeholders to have their say on policy and priorities related to Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) and mobility management. Over 130 people attended the event, which was introduced by Herald Ruijters (DG MOVE) and included two consecutive thematic sessions moderated by Piotr Rapacz and Isabelle Vandoorne (DG MOVE).

A workshop on Urban Vehicle Access Regulations (UVARs) drew the series of consultation workshops to a close on 28 June. Moderated by Ivo Cré (POLIS) and Bonnie Fenton (Rupprecht Consult), the event was attended by 156 participants who split into two groups to discuss the role UVARs should play in cities in the future and the current barriers that stand in the way to an effective UVAR scheme.
