Coimbra promotes mobility awareness campaign in primary schools

The City Council of Coimbra is teaching primary school students correct and safe mobility behaviours to be adopted in public spaces.

Following the 2022 European Mobility Week (EMW), the Mobility, Transport and Traffic Division and the Education Division of the City Council of Coimbra committed to increasing awareness among primary school students on the adoption of correct mobility behaviours in public spaces. As part of the EMW, that the Municipality of Coimbra joined in September 2022, blocks of “moral fines” and a small EMW backpack were distributed to students in Coimbra’s primary schools.

In the ticket blocks, students will be able to report various infractions that a driver is committing, such as irregular parking (e.g. on sidewalks, crosswalks, in parking spaces reserved to people with disabilities or on the road or bus stops). The aim of this initiative and to involve children is to make them aware of urban mobility issues and the needed changes in habits.

The first session of this initiative took place on 23 March at EB1 in Almedina primary school. On this occasion, “moral fines” were distributed, in the presence of municipal technicians, accompanied by the Mobility councillor, Ana Bastos, and by the Education councillor, Ana Cortez Vaz. The initiative continued the following day on 24 March at EB1 in S. Martinho do Bispo primary school.

Both sessions of the mobility awareness campaign helped children to learn about the precautions to be taken in the area of mobility.
