Bucharest to implement a Hub to share data and information

On 10 April 2023, Nicusor Dan, the Mayor of the City of Bucharest, announced the establishment of a Mobility and Urban Management Hub in the Romanian capital. The project will cost €1.19 million and will be funded from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

As explained by the Mayor, the main goal of the new Hub is to create a space that encourages debate, communication and information sharing between the city’s local authorities, its residents and stakeholders regarding urban mobility projects of public interest. The Hub will also showcase Bucharest and all its municipalities’ mobility plans and development projects, to support the digital connection and collaboration between public institutions and the city's residents.

As part of the project, a digital platform will be implemented, which will provide open data about urban planning and mobility, as well as real-time information from public transport and mobility operators. Local authorities – such as Bucharest City Authority, its municipalities, districts and other public institutions – will integrate their data, including that on urban public projects and development plans, into the Hub. Moreover, residents will be able to participate to improve the services on the Hub.

Bucharest is not the first city in Romania to adopt such a digital system that will support residents’ movement around their city. The city of Cluj-Napoca, which is the second largest in Romania, has also recently announced the introduction of a similar digital system, that will enable users to monitor in real-time the position of public transport vehicles, such as buses, on a mobile app that updates estimated arrival times and other real-time information every 20 seconds.

The Mobility and Urban Management Hub aims to open the door to a much bigger project, which will be the implementation of the Bucharest Urbanism Centre, an entity that is expected to monitor, manage and coordinate the city’s urban development.
