Bilbao unveils fully electric bike-sharing scheme

Bilbao has unveiled a revamped version of its public bike-sharing scheme, Bilbaobizi, featuring a fully electric fleet and expanded coverage across the city. The launch took place on 15 June during a celebratory event as part of "Bike Sundays," where residents were invited to test the new bikes and engage in cycling-themed activities. The scheme introduces 790 electric bicycles and 48 smart charging stations, marking a major step forward in accessibility and convenience for urban commuters.

The shift to a 100% electric fleet is well suited to Bilbao’s hilly terrain, making cycling easier for a broader range of users. Automated charging stations reduce the need for maintenance vehicles, lowering emissions and improving operational efficiency. Users can access the service through a mobile app already available in other Spanish cities, offering features such as bike location, ride pausing and account management. With this move, Bilbao joins Madrid and Zaragoza in adopting fully electrified bike-sharing systems, reflecting a growing national trend towards sustainable urban mobility.

By 2026, the network will expand to 1,250 bikes and 68 stations, increasing coverage across more neighbourhoods. The bicycles are designed for safety and durability, equipped with GPS, audible alerts, security locks and integrated lighting. A new customer service centre will support users, and the updated pricing model differentiates between regular and occasional riders.

The scheme aligns with Bilbao’s wider transport strategy, complementing initiatives such as the low-emission zone (LEZ) and the “Bilbao 30” traffic calming plan, all aimed at reducing car dependency and fostering a more liveable urban environment.
