Bike-sharing scheme launches 200 bicycles in Tallinn to boost sustainable urban mobility

The Czech bike-sharing company Rekola Bikesharing is set to introduce 200 bicycles in Tallinn, Estonia by the end of August, as part of the city's initiative to enhance sustainable urban transport. The deployment aligns with Tallinn's goals to increase mobility options for residents and reduce reliance on motor vehicles, thereby decreasing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

Tallinn's Deputy Mayor, Kristjan Järvan, expressed support for Rekola's market-driven approach, emphasising that the initiative complements the city's transportation goals. “The coalition agreement of the Tallinn city government aims to start bicycle circulation in the capital of Estonia, and Rekola’s plans are therefore perfectly compatible with the goal of the Tallinn city government to increase mobility opportunities for residents."

The project is also privately funded, requiring no taxpayer money. Järvan highlighted that the private nature of the project prevents market distortion from public funding, showcasing how entrepreneurship can effectively address urban mobility challenges.

Rekola Bikesharing, known for its community-focused and environmentally conscious operations, now operates over 3,000 bicycles across eight cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The expansion to Tallinn reflects the city's mission for enhanced urban living conditions through accessible and sustainable transport solutions, as well as reduced emissions.
