BGN 182 million from the Regional Development Programme to be invested in improved urban transport

Seven Bulgarian municipalities are beginning to implement strategic projects that will give residents access to contemporary, eco-friendly transport. Contracts for the initiatives have already been signed.

Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna, Blagoevgrad, Plovdiv, Vidin and Ruse will invest BGN 182 million from the 2021–2027 Development of Regions Programme to deliver more affordable, safer and cleaner public transport. For just over one million citizens, the funding will improve connectivity, road safety, air quality and the overall quality and affordability of transport services.

The projects are expected to cut emissions from urban transport by up to 30%. In Pleven, Plovdiv, Ruse, Varna and Vidin, outdated fleets will be replaced with new electric buses and charging infrastructure, reducing harmful emissions and providing quieter, more comfortable mobility — including for vulnerable groups. Upgrades to intelligent transport systems, video surveillance and the reconstruction of key corridors will further enhance traffic safety and reduce congestion.

Hundreds of bus stops will be renovated in Pleven and Ruse, while Blagoevgrad will construct a new pedestrian link between the city centre and a neighbouring quarter. In Veliko Tarnovo’s Varosha district, three new multi-storey car parks will ease pressure on central-area traffic.

The restoration of the panoramic Varna–Golden Sands road will address a long-standing infrastructure issue, improving access to tourist areas and supporting economic development in the city’s north-eastern part.

In Plovdiv, existing traffic management systems will be upgraded to provide priority for public transport and increase energy efficiency.
