As announced at the Smart City Expo, the third edition of the Innova Lab mobility challenge in Barcelona, Spain (ES), set to launch in January 2025, will focus on tackling noise pollution and addressing inefficiencies in urban freight logistics. With EUR 200 000 in funding for pilot projects, the challenge aims to unite diverse stakeholders to share insights and co-create solutions serving the public interest. Michael Donaldson, Barcelona’s Chief Innovation Officer, emphasised the importance of open dialogue and collaboration to address these shared urban challenges. The initiative highlights Barcelona’s commitment to leveraging innovation for improved urban living.
Noise pollution, primarily caused by mobility (at 85 % according to the city council) will be a focal point. Barcelona plans to explore advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and sensors, to measure and manage acoustic impacts, improving urban planning and mobility strategies. Urban freight logistics, which account for over 145 000 daily deliveries, is another significant concern, with pedestrian areas frequently overcrowded by delivery vehicles. The challenge seeks innovative, data-driven approaches to optimise logistics, aiming to reclaim public spaces for pedestrians and enhance goods distribution efficiency.
Established in 2022, Barcelona’s Innova Lab has supported public-interest innovation projects by providing technical assistance and real-world testing opportunities. Past challenges focused on improving bus networks and motorcycle safety, demonstrating the city’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility. The Lab’s 2024 bus network challenge winners, Hayden AI and Buspas, are piloting advanced technologies to improve transit operations. Hayden AI’s mobile perception system targets illegal parking in bus lanes, while Buspas is developing smart bus stops equipped with real-time, IoT-powered information systems. Together, these projects exemplify the potential of global collaboration in tackling urban mobility challenges.
