300 new fossil-free buses to be introduced in Stockholm in 2022

Over 300 new fossil-free buses will be introduced in the northern suburbs of Stockholm. The buses will be introduced when Transdev – currently one of Sweden’s largest passenger transport operators – begins operating bus services in two new traffic areas, in August and November 2022.

The new buses will be fuelled by RME, a biofuel produced from rapeseed oil. In addition, the buses will be adapted for accessibility as well as offering greater comfort for passengers, with USB sockets at each seat and free Wi-Fi on board. The order will also include 40 new double-deckers which will connect the two new traffic areas with the Stockholm Technical University.

The buses are being manufactured by Volvo and MAN and will be delivered on an ongoing basis throughout 2022, before entering into service in August and November 2022 when Transdev begins operating services.

Mattias Galante, who is responsible for the project at Transdev, stated: “It feels great to introduce new buses in northern Stockholm. It is important for us to offer reliable, safe, comfortable and sustainable mobility solutions to our passengers.” Galante also highlighted Volvo and Man’s reliability and sustainable supply chains, a key consideration for Transdev.

Currently Transdev operates a number of transport services, including bus services on behalf of the Stockholm Regional Transit Authority (SL) in Märsta, Sigtuna, Upplands Väsby and Vallentuna. As of 15 April 2022, Transdev will also operate Roslagsbanan, a commuter rail line. Elsewhere, Snälltåget – a Transdev brand – operates night trains between Stockholm and Berlin via Copenhagen and Hamburg.
