262 million euros available for EU transport projects

The European Commission has launched two new calls for transport project proposals in the areas of Mobility for GrowthAutomated Road Transport and Green Vehicles, as well as projects that will contribute to the completion of the TEN-T network. The calls were launched in the first week of December 2018 under the '2018-2020 Horizon 2020 Work Programme' and the '2019 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport Programme'.

Horizon 2020

Under the Horizon 2020 call, €162 million of EU financing will be made available. Topics explicitly covering urban mobility include:

  • MG-4-6-2019 - Supporting Joint Actions on sustainable urban accessibility and connectivity (€6 million)
  • DT-ART-04-2019 - Developing and testing shared, connected and cooperative automated vehicle fleets in urban areas for the mobility of all (€30 million)
  • LC-GV-05-2019 - InCo flagship on "Urban mobility and sustainable electrification in large urban areas in developing and emerging economies" (€18 million)

Other topics include:

  • MG-4-5-2019 - An inclusive digitally interconnected transport system meeting citizens' needs - €7 million
  • LC-GV-03-2019 - User-centric charging infrastructure (€35 million)
  • LC-GV-04-2019 - Low-emissions propulsion for long-distance trucks and coaches (€25 million)
  • DT-ART-03-2019 - Human-centred design for the new driver role in highly automated vehicles (€8 million)
  • MG-BG-02-2019 - Ship emission control scenarios, marine environmental impact and mitigation (€8 million)
  • LC-MG-1-6-2019 - Aviation operations impact on climate change (InCo flagship) (€10 million)
  • LC-MG-1-7-2019 - Future propulsion and integration: towards a hybrid/electric aircraft (InCo flagship) (€15 million)

The deadline to submit proposals for all these calls is 25 April 2019 and the final decision about which projects will receive EU funding will be known by the end of September 2019.

Connecting Europe Facility

The CEF Transport programme is the key EU funding instrument for the development of high performing, sustainable and interconnected Trans-European transport networks. The latest CEF call is open to project applications addressing the following funding objectives of the CEF Regulation:

  • Funding objective 1: Projects on cross-border sections and maritime ports on the Comprehensive Network (indicative budget €65 million)
  • Funding objective 2: Reduction of Rail Freight Noise (indicative budget €35 million)

Two types of applicants can submit their proposal:

  • One or more Member States
  • With the agreement of the Member State(s) concerned, international organisations, joint undertakings, or public or private undertakings or bodies established in an EU Member State

The call will be open for submission of applications from 8 January 2019 to 24 April 2019 at 17.00.00 CET.
