The first edition of the European Capitals of Small Retail Awards Ceremony will take place on 28 January 2026, from 11:30 to 21:30 CET, in Brussels. Organised by the European Commission, the awards recognise cities that are setting the standard for innovation, sustainability and community-driven approaches to small retail.
During the ceremony, finalist cities will pitch their 2026 activity programme to a European Jury, highlighting how they support small retailers and contribute to the future of local commerce.
One winning city will be selected in each of the following categories:
Vanguard
Small-sized cities (5,000–50,000 inhabitants) leading the way in creating supportive environments for small retail
- Makarska, Croatia
- Silandro, Italy
- Silla, Spain
Vibrant
Medium-sized cities (50,000–250,000 inhabitants) where small retail plays a key role in creating dynamic and lively urban areas
- Braga, Portugal
- Caldas de Rainha, Portugal
- Fuenlabrada, Spain
Visionary
Large cities (over 250,000 inhabitants) with forward-looking strategies
- Barcelona, Spain
- Utrecht, the Netherlands
- Zaragoza, Spain
Winning cities will be awarded the European Capitals of Small Retail 2026 title, along with year-long promotional support and visibility across EU channels, and opportunities for knowledge exchange with other cities.
The awards ceremony will bring together urban practitioners, retail experts, entrepreneurs and policymakers to showcase achievements, share best practice examples and inspire action across Europe.
